Above Bergün, in the Glatscheras area near Latsch, lies a steep, mountainous terrain with an extreme incline.
This exposed location brings with it an increasing danger - especially in winter, when heavy snowfall triggers avalanches that are almost impossible to control. Not only cantonal and municipal roads are located in the immediate danger zone, but also the Rhaetian Railway network and inhabited residential areas. Protecting this infrastructure and the people who live there is an urgent task. With a targeted project, measures are being taken in Glatscheras to strengthen the protective function of the forest and create new structures for stabilization - for greater safety in the valley.
Targeted measures are needed so that the forest can once again perform its natural protective function against avalanches. The forestry office is actively reforesting the endangered area. First of all, unstable trees are removed to make room for new protective structures, some of which can be used directly as protection against sliding snow. In addition, around fifty so-called tripods (DBBs) are being built - wooden structures that prevent avalanches from tearing into the area and supplement the localized shoring. Around 500 young, site-appropriate climatic tree species are being planted in order to re-establish a stable protection forest in the long term. A wildlife protection fence will protect the plantations from extreme game browsing for the next 30 years. The project combines technical construction with near-natural reforestation - for safety, stability and a future in a highly endangered mountain location.
